Choosing an upper secondary school with Italian language of instruction: reasons, experiences, and testimonies

Project in cooperation with Dijaški dom Gorica

Lead partner: SLORI
Responsible for SLORI: Maja Mezgec
Project implementation period: 2024-2025

The research focuses on the target group of pupils who, after finishing primary school with Slovenian language of instruction, enrolled in a secondary school with Italian language of instruction. The survey will be conducted in the Gorizia region. Live or remote interviews are planned. Respondents will be (1) parents of pupils who attended a Slovenian primary school in the last two years and then chose an Italian secondary school, and (2) children of parents or pupils interviewed who attended a Slovenian primary school in the last two years and then chose an Italian secondary school.
The survey aims to:
– understand the educational plan that families designed when enrolling in a school with Slovene as the language of instruction,
– analyze the experiences (of pupils and parents) with a school with Slovene as the language of instruction,
– an analysis of the reasons for choosing to continue schooling in Italian.

With the permission of the interviewee, interviews will be recorded and then transcribed. The data collected will be processed to be strictly anonymized or presented without revealing the identity of the respondents.
Planning of the survey took place in 2023 and will begin in early 2024.
