Project implementation period: 2010-2012
The research project is un update of the doctoral dissertation of Marianna Kosic, »Ethnic Identification and Outgroup Attitudes on the Italo-Slovene Borderland«. It studies plural ethnic, national, transnational and territorial identities of minority and majority population living on the Italo-Slovene borderland, intergroup relations of these communities and their attitudes towards diversity. It aims to verify the degree of territorial attachments among members of the Slovenian and Italian population in Italy and the Slovenian population in Slovenia, their subjective perception of themselves, their ingroups and outgroups, the perceived markers of ethnic and national identity and of a successful integration of new minorities. Furthermore, it explores whether those with hybrid and more complex identities are more open towards diversity, and whether the entrance of Slovenia in the Schengen area has affected intergroup relations at the borderland and the development of a positive ethnic identity in Slovene minority members. The results will be presented in scientific articles, during conferences addressing the topic and to interested cooperating schools.
