As part of the preparations for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the burning of the National Halls (Narodni dom), in February 2020, the Slovene Cultural and Economic Association (SKGZ) and the Confederation of Slovene Organisations (SSO) initiated a research project through its Target Temporary Association ‘Project’. Their aim was to obtain the information and viewpoints necessary to create a strategic vision for the further development of the multi-purpose centre of Trieste Slovenes and the wider local community. Both umbrella organisations entrusted SLORI with the implementation of the research, the aim of which was to gather views, positions and proposals for the future purpose of this facility, as well as information on the actual needs and plans of Slovene social and cultural circles which had expressed interest in moving to new premises. The survey covered the institutions and organisations of primary importance to the Slovene national community in Italy, as well as Slovene associations operating in the Trieste city centre. The collection of the questionnaires took place during a period of strict restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which conditioned the course of the research. The results of the research were summarised in a report, which also includes a historical introduction by Dr Gorazd Bajc and Dr Borut Klabjan and a selection of photographic material of the National Halls building as it used to be, provided by the Department of History and Ethnography at the NŠK. The results of the research were presented on 24 July on the outdoor premises of TPK Sirena in Barkovlje/Barcola.
