The school with the Slovene language of instruction ‘Ljubka Šorli’ in Vermegliano/Romjan is a very interesting case study, since the majority of the school population is made up of native Italian-speaking pupils whose parents have decided to educate them in the local minority language. These pupils interact daily with Slovenian peers, attending classes together in an environment where communication takes place in the Slovenian language. Talking about the identity of these children means putting at the centre of the theme their location between two worlds: the world of origin (the Italian majority world) and the host world (the world of the local Slovene minority).
The volume Multilinguismo e identità nelle aree di confine: il caso della scuola con lingua d’insegnamento slovena di Vermegliano / Večjezičnost in identitete v obmejnem prostoru: primer šole s slovenskim učnim jezikom v Romjanu aims to help better understand the complex dynamics and the numerous linguistic and cultural intertwining involving the Italian and Slovene communities and to stimulate the improvement of the school offer in the area from an increasingly multicultural and inclusive point of view.
