This book presents the results of the research on the knowledge and use of languages in the Val Canale. With the support of her own personal experience of teaching Slovene in the area, the author demonstrates individuals’ relationships with the languages present and especially with the Slovene language. The book then looks at the activities and the role of cultural circles, education in a mixed environment and also the relationship between languages and local economic development. The empirical results are related to the current theoretical models and introduced by a description of the socio-linguistic aspect of the Val Canale. Finally, some guidelines are proposed to aid the development of the Slovene language in this ethnically mixed environment.
