The author tackles the theme of mixed marriages between Italians and members of the Slovene community in the province of Trieste, taking into consideration the various factors that influence the transmission of ethnic and linguistic identity. In the first section the main theoretical trends from social studies on the definition of cultural groups and ethnic identity are introduced. The empirical analysis however, is concentrated on several partly-structured interviews held with parents belonging to mixed families, which singles out the role of various agents of socialisation such as the family, grandparents, school and associations in the processes of transmission of cultural and ethnic identity.
