The monograph represents a research work in the field of urban minority communities, which has not yet been realised in such a methodologically complete form, neither on a local nor on a European level. In it the author analyses the change in the socio-economic situation and social structure of Slovenes in Trieste and identifies the different phases of assimilation of the Slovenian population into the Triestine “melting pot”. The first part deals with the socio-political representation of the Slovene presence in Trieste through the prism of the reinterpretation of the 1910 census; the second part, based on original research data, presents the concept of the Slovene from Trieste in the context of a contemporary mobile society as a variegated amalgam of cultural and linguistic elements and origins, of self-definition and multiform belonging. The book is published in cooperation with the Slovene Research Institute – SLORI and co-published by Slovenska matica, the publishing house Annales of the Koper Centre for Scientific Research and the ZTT-EST.
