Un teatro per la città (eng. CITIZENS THEATRE : A brief history of the Slovene Theatre in Trieste)
The free translation of the Italian title illustrates the scope of activities of the Slovene Theatre in Trieste, which arose out of an effort to establish a tradition in the times when the Slovene and Slavic urban classes became aware of being located on the outskirts of the Slavic world and began publicly asserting their ethnicity. The reason this brief historical overview was first drafted in Italian lies in the fact that despite its long operation in Italy, the Theatre is not well known by Italians, and neither are Slovenes, their fellow citizens. Trieste has witnessed a hundred and fifty years of extremely unsettling and conflictual periods, which have left a mark on its population. All the while it was the Slovene Theatre that recorded the ups and downs of these turbulent times. The operation of the Slovene Theatre in Trieste is thus in every respect a mirror of the time and space in which it operates.
